GVI’s Under-18 programs are crafted to give teens an in-depth volunteer experience along with adventure and the chance to acquire new skills. Once you’ve arrived at base and settled in after being collected from Cancun airport, you’ll ease into project life with some introductions, background information and local history before starting your formal and practical learning which will be focussed on the marine environment and conservation in general. The PADI Advanced Open Water course aims to make you a more confident and knowledgeable diver through a variety of adventure dives. Two of the required dives that you will complete while on this program will be Deep and Underwater Navigation. The other three dives will be chosen by your PADI Dive Instructor. These dives will have a conservation focus, aiming to make you a well-rounded and safe Advanced Open Water diver. Since you’ll be learning from experts, you’ll pick up on some of the best tips and tricks and learn more about marine conservation on the way, all while experiencing some of the best diving conditions the world has to offer. After learning all the theory about the local marine life and the health of the coral reef, you will be in the water applying your new knowledge through snorkeling and scuba dives, identifying the various marine species and conservation issues you have been learning about. Since you’ll be with a team of project staff, conservationists and local dive experts, you’ll constantly be able to continue your learning! You’ll have the opportunity to visit the GVI marine conservation program base in Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve with a team of local and international researchers to learn about their efforts to conserve the this stunning area.
